How Are You Stopping Yourself From Achieving Your Goals At Work Or In Your Business?
When you are not achieving your goals at work or in your business it is very easy to point the blame at other people or areas of the business or even outside factors, such as the economy, customers, suppliers etc. However, before you put the blame elsewhere, start by reflecting on your own personal performance and how you may be contributing.
So, how are you stopping yourself from achieving your goals at work or in your business? Here are some of the areas you may like to consider:
Communication & building relationships. Effective communication at work or in your business is critical to achieving your goals and objectives, whether this be communicating and building relationships with colleagues, staff, shareholders, suppliers or customers. How are your communication skills and relationships at work and are they stopping you achieving your goals?
Decision making. There are many different types of decisions that need to be made at work ranging from short term operational decisions to longer term strategic decisions. Delaying, deferring or avoiding decision making can stop you from achieving your goals. How is your decision making stopping you meeting your objectives?
Flexibility and adaptability. Change and the unexpected is an inevitable part of life and work and only through accepting that change happens, learning how to handle it, dealing with it positively and being flexible and adaptable can you still achieve your goals at work. How flexible and adaptable to change and the unexpected are you?
Help and support. It is very difficult to achieve your goals and objectives at work on your own. Everyone needs help and support at some stage, whether from your manager, your team or a colleague or from outside advisors. What help and support do you need to achieve your goals?
Openness. Being open to new ideas and willing to try new things, including learning from others, staying on top of new developments, taking manageable risks and being willing to experiment will help you achieve your goals at work. Where do you need to be more open in your role to enable the achievement of your goals?
Taking action. Taking action to achieve your goals is critical to you achieving them. Only by taking action will you move towards your goals, but many things can get in the way such as procrastination, getting distracted, endless meetings and crisis management. What is stopping you taking action to achieve your goals?
Team management. Actively managing your team through meetings, one to ones, performance reviews, setting clear objectives, providing feedback and managing poor performance is the bed rock to maximising the performance of the business and achieving your goals at work. What improvements can you make in how you manage your team?
Thinking. The way you think can cause you to make inaccurate assessments of your experiences, to get the wrong end of the stick, to jump to conclusions, to think the worst, to distort the facts and it can get in the way of the achievement of your goals at work and in your business. How is your thinking impacting the achievement of your goals?
Time management. Managing your time effectively and keeping focused are key to achieving your goals at work. This may be through delegating and outsourcing, prioritising, managing your time through to do lists, diary management or many of the other ways of managing your time. How is your time management impacting you achieving your goals?
Understanding the business environment. A lack of understanding of what is happening in the outside world, including market trends, customer trends, economic changes, competitor activity and the areas that may impact the company you work at may prevent you achieving your goals. Do you fully understand the current business environment that your business is operating in and how this may be impacting the achievement of your goals?
Hopefully the above has got you thinking about what changes you can make in your own performance so that you achieve your goals at work or in your business.
