10 Ways To Feel Less Stressed At Work Or In Your Business

You may be feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed at work or in your business. You will also probably be experiencing physical, behavioural and/or emotional symptoms that are showing you that you are stressed. When you are feeling like this it is really difficult to know what to do for the best. I have therefore highlighted below 10 ideas for you to try that may help you to feel less stressed:

Acknowledge that you are stressed. When you are stressed it is easy to try to just carry on as if nothing is wrong, hoping that things will get better. However if you do this you are likely to keep feeling worse. The first thing to do is to acknowledge to yourself that you are stressed and that you need to do something about it.

Try and calm down a little bit. There are lots of small things you can do to try and calm down a little bit so you are in a position to decide what to do about the stress. Examples are slowing down your breathing, taking a break from what you are doing and going to a different place, taking some exercise, thinking about how you have overcome similar challenges in the past and writing down what has gone well today, in the last week, the past year etc.

Talk to someone about how you are feeling. You may be reluctant to tell anyone how you are feeling as you may see stress as a sign of weakness or feel you should be able to cope. However from my experience telling another person (e.g. your partner, a friend, a business colleague, your doctor, an independent person etc.) how you are feeling comes as a big relief and helps you to see that there is a way forward.

Write down everything that you are worrying about. When you are stressed it can be very challenging to work out what is causing the anxiety and stress. A good starting point is to write down everything you are worrying about. This will start to create a picture for you of what is causing you to feel stressed.

Try and identify the main cause(s) of your stress. In order to reduce stress and feel better you need to understand the root cause(s) of your stress. Look at the list you have created above, consider recent changes that have happened, think about factors outside of your control, consider what is happening at the times you are getting stressed and when you are feeling stressed keep asking why and delving deeper. Once you understand the root cause(s) you can start to take action to resolve it.

Consider how you are thinking. You probably don't spend much time considering how you think about different situations. However, how you think affects how you feel, so if you are feeling stressed, your thinking may be causing some of the stress or it may be exaggerating it. Examples of unhelpful thinking include thinking the worse, all or nothing thinking, mind reading and disqualifying the positive.

Remind yourself of what you enjoy about your job or running your business. When you are feeling very stressed you can think that you need to just get out of the situation you are in. A helpful thing to do is to remind yourself of what you enjoy about your job or running your business and why you took the job or started your business in the first place. This will help you gain perspective on the situation.

Write down what you have achieved. Another productive thing to do is to write down what you have achieved in the past, your successes, the challenges you have overcome and your career experience to date. You can then review your list and see all the positives as well as considering how what you have achieved may help you now.

Make a plan, take action, focus and review progress. Once you are clearer on what is causing your stress, consider the different options that could address the cause(s) and help you feel better. Make a plan of what you are going to do and when. Taking action is the key to moving forward and feeling better. If you don't take any action everything will stay the same or may even get worse. Even just taking some action may help you feel less stressed. Stay focused, review progress and how you are feeling and re-plan if necessary and things are not improving.

Get support. All of the above can seem very daunting when you are feeling stressed so you may want to get support from a third party. You may want to get support from your doctor or a counsellor or get practical help from someone like myself who will support you with the above, to feel better and to move forward to where you want to me.

Hopefully you have found the above a good source of ideas to help you if you are feeling stressed.
